hanging out with my girlfriend today postponed writing this but not as much as volunteering sometimes does, plus it was fun. wins all 'round :D

what i'm reading currently: merthur fic my girlfriend sent me. he has great taste in fanfiction, by the way.

what i've just finished: acotar. the series. final thoughts: it's bad. i like it because it's bad. i need to write sixteen fix-its. however, sjm's writing style did not need to be that dense. like, bestie, you're writing faefucker smut, this doesn't need to read like marion zimmer bradley.

what's next: maggie stiefvater's all the crooked saints is overdue for a reread, i do believe.

I picked this book up after stumbling across the cover during an image search for something else  and checking out the synopsis to see what I thought. It looked from cover and summary like it would be a much better written, Black-centered ACOTAR and so far, halfway through the book, it's both lived up to and surpassed those expectations. Sbrana handles the horror-and-trauma part of living as captives in a fae-ruled land incredibly well, especially Lore's run-ins with the Sentries, which are always bone-chilling. Lore is also refreshingly intelligent, figuring out what the ward around Duskmere quickly and harboring appropriate distrust of her fae captors, lying easily for her own safety. I don't always expect my protagonist to be this sharp, but I get frustrated when someone who's supposedly lived a hard life in dangerous or destitute circumstances behaves as if they grew up in soft suburbia.

Further thoughts: everyone is pretty as hell—is Lore, mayhaps, bisexual? Also I don't trust that magic book of hers. I believed what it showed her was true but what kind of deal did she make?? Or maybe that's just my natural lack of trust in unfamiliar technology. Magic is a kind of technology, fight me.

i think the thing that's ultimately wrong with acotar is that they should've been lesbians. seriously that series was meant to be awful lesbians being awful to each other for five books and then she went and made it bland and boring by having most of them be men.

i think it's slightly funny that all of my "ultimate fave" book series have color-coded characters. (six of crows, the last hours, shades of magic, perilous courts)

(inej is purple, kell is red, corin is pink, thomas is green, etcetc)

As you've probably noticed I've been slowly customizing the theme of my journal more and more over the last couple of days. I needed to set up something quick because a) I came here from tumblr so I'm used to the "make sure you at least have a profile pic and some small customization so you don't look like a bot" and b) because i found the "default" style kinda ugly to be honest with y'all. Then I could start messing with it and mess I have. I think I've got something I like right now, though I'm still waffling back and forth between this and the "Persephone" theme for the same base layout. I feel like "Persephone" better depicts the gothy, edgy, still-in-my-teen-goth-phase side of my personality, while this better depicts the dark academia-ish, would-love-to-be-a-cozy-mystery-protagonist side. Idk. I may just allow myself to be indecisive and flip back and forth between the two.
